Water Tips Print E-mail

Even with global warming and the droughts we've experienced over the past decade, water in North America is plentiful, and as long as you don't waste it, there's plenty for any off-gridder in the form of groundwater and precipitation.

Some folks are fortunate enough to have direct access to lakes and streams, and they can take water easily by gravity, siphon systems, or pumps.

Here's what the U.S. Geological Survey says about well-users wasting water: "If you own a water-table well and you pump excessive amounts of water from your well, there is a danger of your well going dry as consumption continues and groundwater levels fall. Since aquifers can be quite extensive, the usage of your well can influence other people miles away. Groundwater that supplies your well also feeds streams during periods of low flow, so pumping from your well may also cause the water levels in streams to be lower."

It's time to stop being greedy with water. The earth has to take care of a huge, expanding population. Your access to well water does not entitle you to unlimited wastefulness.

Conserving Water

Let's emphasize a few points here:

Fewer flushes.
Repair leaking toilets and faucets immediately.
Wash only full loads of laundry.
Use filtered or treated gray water for gardens and landscapes.
Don't overwater.
