Collectors, Part 2 Print E-mail

Concentrating Collectors

These use a reflective parabolic surface to concentrate energy to a focal point where the absorber is located. To be effective the collector must track the sun. It can reach high temperatures, but the technology has not yet been developed for domestic water heating systems.

Pool Collectors

Plain and simple, this guide isn't about swimming pools. It's about achieving the necessities of life by becoming involved in off-grid technology. If you have a swimming pool, you can afford to ask a technician or consultant and dealer about heating your pool with solar power. In the meantime, simply type "solar pool heaters" in your search engine to locate several websites that will have the basic information you need to get started.

Collector Mounts

Collector mounting systemsor racks, as they're often calledare installed as roof mounts, awning mounts, or ground mounts. Roof mounts are done on brackets a few inches above and parallel to the roof. Ground mounts are basically four posts with lengths adjusted for tilt. Awning mounts attach the collector to a wall and use vertical supports to push the collector out for tilt. Collectors full of fluid or water can be enormously heavy. If weight is an issue, ground mounts are easiest and least likely to cause structural damage to the home.
