In 2007 a West Coast company introduced a fully manufactured green home that Science Digest described as "subtle, chic, and the epitome of modern-day sustainable living." You order the home and soon a load of green technologies and materials arrive and are assembled at your site. The concept is great. The home features water recirculation, a real toilet, energy-efficient foam insulation, LED lighting, a grass- and flower-growing roof, and rainwater storage for landscape irrigation. The 1.5 kilowatt PV system lets you plug in your hybrid car and still have plenty of juice to power all your appliances. Every piece of the house has been planned to be eco-friendly. Sounds great, right? Here's the kicker: It's a one-bedroom, 700-square-foot dwelling that costs nearly $250,000, not including the land, the site preparation, or the installation. Um ... excuse the pessimism, but low- and middle-class America is not ready for this. A converted mobile home would cost far less than half as much. As Science Digest implied, living green is easy, but not cheap. |
